Vintage market review

Writer's picture: masterofnunnmasterofnunn

So Last Century organise a regular vintage market at various venues - see their site for future events. I have been to many of their venues St. Dunstans college on the A205 South Circular, They also had a site near Beckenham within the grounds of Beckenham Spa but going by their website (solastcenturyfair.co.uk)this is not longer one of their venues and they have added the Fairfield hall at Croydon and Goldsmith college at New Cross.

Having said all that, my favourite place is the Mansion House at Beckenham Palace Park which I visited today. It is so vibrant with runners, joggers, dog walker and that is before you even enter the fair. All the features seem to attract a very friendly group of stall holders followed by a crowd of easy, laidback shoppers. The mansion is a very nice place to explore, a basement which includes an independent record shop as well as a large cafe that looks out over the old golf course, long gone. The middle or ground floor,if you approach from the main entrance, hosts most of the stalls showing vintage clothing, 60s wares, prints, posters etc but there is also a visitor's centre where the ladies are very enthusiastic about the surrounding area - well worth an additional visit.

As you proceed up the spiral staircase to the art gallery (see pic) you appreciate the history of the mansion. Once at the top you will find several artists with some very nice paintings and there is also a photography gallery to boot. Don't forget to look out at the splendid views.

Busy the website and put the next venue in your calendar
